  KAUNAS

About Kaunas

Kaunas is situated in Lithuania. The City has a population of 356,701. The total area of Kaunas city is 157 km2, of which 48 km2 is developed as built up areas. The unemployment rate is 2.1%. Kaunas is one of the main centers of education in Lithuania. There are seven universities, and four branches of other universities Kaunas’ Laisves Alley together with Vilnius street is the longest pedestrian route in the Baltic States, its length is 2900 metres. Kaunas has two funiculars (slope trams), constructed in interwar period still in use. Kaunas is located at the confluence of the two largest Lithuanian rivers: the Nemunas and the Neris. Kaunas has the unique city centre built-up with buildings of Lithuanian Modernism.

Transport Issues

Kaunas City Municipality Transport Division is a local authority, founder of two public transport companies: Bus company „Kauno autobusai“and trolleybus company “Autrolis”. Transport division is responsible for traffic planning, organizing PT routs, timetables, regulating taxis, and other private public transport companies, also executing mobility management campaigns and etc. Most of citizens, about 60 % (36% trolleybuses, 24 % buses) transport for their daily trips, 40 000 students are also heavy users of PT for their every day trips, but rapidly increasing economic growth of Lithuania threaten with increasing number of private cars, and increasing business related mobility.

Kaunas has started to achieve a lot in areas of sustainable mobility and energy efficiency good practice but we still need to learn how to link our activities up to an overall programme of improvement; we also need to be better at understanding how the city can benefit from a more coordinated connectivity in energy and urban mobility projects.
