Transport Issues

Romania during the last decades is confronted with problems related to the boost of the traffic, especially within the urban conurbations, manly due to the continuous increase of the vehicle number, both private and freight. A special situation is seen in Bucharest where the number of cars increased from 409.947 in 1992 to 1.014.120 in 2006. In spite of this, the public transport from Bucharest has kept a relatively high market share – about 50%. There are an estimated 5.7 million trips per day in Bucharest. There are approximately 500 cars for 1000 inhabitants Responsibilities as well as the operations for surface public transport and metro lie with different entities.

Within the Bucharest Municipality, the responsibility for surface public transport modes sets down to the Department of Public Transport and the Means of Communication which is taken care of by one of the Deputy Mayors. Among surface public transport modes, operation of tram, trolley bus and bus are devolved to RATB, which is the main public transport operator.
